Challenge #3

In your own space, put some favorite characters into an AU, fuse some favorite canons together, talk about your favorite AU/fusion tropes, or tell us why AU/fusions aren’t your cup of tea.

I actually like it all. So long as the characters are recognizable I don't mind seeing them in different worlds.

Most of my stories are as canon compliant as possible. That usually means that the only difference is who I've paired together. I have one story (Rogue) where I ignored a major plot point because I found it to be stupid. I have one story series (This So Called Life) where I changed the gender of one of the main characters. I am also working on a Teen Wolf story that is completely AU (everyone is human and in high school together).

I feel like you can learn a lot about the canon and characters by writing/reading them in a world that is different from the one they normally inhabit.

I'm nodding my head like crazy reading your post.

I love a good crossover, but I totally agree, I need to be able to recognize the characters - if they get too off beam, you might as well be reading OCs. And yes, putting them in other situations/worlds or interacting with characters from other canon can really make you think thinky thoughts about the original canon or characters.

Y'know, I hadn't even considered this as a type of AU. I think I had it classified under 'fixing canon's mistakes' :D

I agree, many AUs work perfectly as character exploration/studies!

I like nestling my works into places that canon hadn't ruled out, but I also don't mind going AU when needed. Also, the Nick Fury rule regarding stupid bits of canon is a good one to have in your pocket.

I've done that a time or two, although one that I really didn't like was the A-plot for the season finale.
