Not sure I'm back for good but I need some advice and I'm sure my co-workers are tired of hearing me complain about this.

Because it's gonna get long I'm putting it under a cut. Feel free to skip if you no longer (or never did) care about me.

Back in December 2013 I was told that my housing voucher no longer covers a two bedroom/two bath apartment which meant I had to pay the difference. I was hoping it wouldn't be that much but it took me to nearly $600 a month.

I didn't have the money to move at that time for several reasons. The main one being that my daughter wanted to graduate from her high school and since she was a senior... The next main one being that I always ended up owing her dance teacher over $1000 by the end of the school year.

So I began looking in order to move this year.

I found myself a really nice apartment. It's newly remodeled, new carpet, new fixtures (black instead of white or cream), faux granite counter tops, hardwood in the non-wet areas, washer/dryer (which I didn't need at that time) and a microwave (which I DO need).

Due to working major overtime and just being lazy, by the time I went to put in an application it was nearly the end of January (my lease ended February 28). And they had decided that with the renovations they were not accepting housing residents until April or May.

This means I was stuck either staying where I was (which in hindsight I should have done) or taking the next available apartment (which I did).

I went to the complex and put in an application. They told me that they didn't have a unit for me to look at because they were/are one hundred percent full. I turned in my thirty day vacate notice once I was approved to move in. When I went to pay my deposit I was told I wouldn't be able to move in until March 13. This forced me to have to live with my parents for a few weeks.

Well, as luck would have it, my washer broke a few days later. Not that that mattered at that point because my new apartment doesn't have a washer/dryer connection so I have to do my laundry at my mother's.

And then I got sick. I thought it was just a cold and treated it as such. By Friday February 20 I was feeling almost one hundred percent. When I woke up that Saturday I felt like I'd been hit by a truck. I bought more cold medicine and began treating it again. Only difference this time was I had no appetite and a horrible cough.

Sunday I ended throwing up so decided that something more serious than just a cold was going on and went to the doctor. Turns out I had pneumonia.

That Monday I was supposed to move but due to a winter storm I rescheduled for the next day.

My mother came over and while I tried to remember how to breathe she supervised the movers.

That next week was spent sleeping and sleeping some more.

I'm still not back to one hundred percent but I am better.

Now on to the real issue here.

March 13 came and the housing inspector did not go inspect it. Nor did he inspect it that following Monday. I found out (by calling him) that he inspected it Tuesday. The apartment didn't call me until Wednesday.

I went to look at it that night and almost got knocked over by the stench of cigarette smoke when the leasing agent opened the door.

She said it was just fresh paint. Um, no. I know what fresh paint smells like and it is a pleasant smell (well, to me it is) and this was most definitely not a pleasant smell.

Also, the floor slopes rather badly. It looks level but when you walk across it you can tell it is not and it's giving me vertigo. Combine this with the slight headache I've had due to the stench of cigarette smoke, I am not doing so well anymore.

I don't think it's healthy for me (even if I wasn't still recovering from pneumonia) to live in an apartment that has cigarette smoke leaking into it from the neighbors.

I have emailed my case worker but doubt I'll hear back from her.

If I can't move out do any of you have any suggestions on how to get rid of the smell? It has started to seep into my clothes and I now smell like a smoker and I hate that smell (as well as being highly allergic to it). I have tried air fresheners but they are not working. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
