Hey, y'all. I know I haven't been here in forever. I was mostly over on TikTok for the past couple of years, but I recently deleted my account for reasons. I didn't immediately come back here because my laptop broke nearly a year ago and I find it awkward to type on my tablet. I'm doing this now because of what happened yesterday here in the US.
I was raised in an extremely religious house. We went to church every Sunday morning, Sunday evening, and Wednesday evening. We also attened every other thing the church did (revivals, VBS, etc). My mother sang in the choir and was the leader of the women's missionary groups, and my dad ran the sound board. As my mother got older, she started working in the church nursery.
I was told that people who don't look like me (white), love like me (heterosexual), don't come from where I come from (born within the US), and don't believe like I was raised to beleive (Christian) are going to hell. Needless to say, I have come to my own conclusions on all of that (but that's getting ahead of the story).
Until 2008, I voted Rebuplican because that was how I was raised. But hearing how Republicans wanted to get rid of my ability to choose what happens to my body, I voted Democrat; much to my parents' horror.
I do not like talking politics because I cannot defend why I feel the way I do about the big issues. Other than abortion. I truly believe that abortion is healthcare.
Saturday, I had dinner with my parents, my daughter, and my SIL. My dad has a habit of turning the conversation to politics, usually when my daughter is around (I guess he thinks he can convince her his views are the right ones). My mom, SIL, and I went inside to start cleaning up, leaving my dad and daughter outside to talk.
They started talking about politics and when we all came back out, they were discussing abortion.
My dad actually said that he read an article that described what women went through when abortion was illegal (pre-1973) and that changed how he felt about abortion and made him firmly anti-abortion. I couldn't beleive what I heard! He read about how women were dying horrible deaths due to botched abortions and it made him anti-abortion!? Stories like that made me pro-choice.
My mom at one point said that she doesn't vote straight party, which I know is a lie because if she voted for the person and not the party she never would have voted for Trump. (back in 2016 (I think) I told her about some of the horrible things he had said and done and she said she hadn't heard or seen them (she obviously wasn't paying attention)).
I know people are going no-contact with their family members who voted for Trump. I would love to do that but the thought of not having my parents in my life scares me. Plus, I still kinda need them even though I'm over 50.
At this point, I'm hoping Trump doesn't make good on his promise to become a dictator because he will not be able to run again in 2028 and we can work on turning the country back to where it was headed in 2008.
