Snowflake Challenge
Jan. 14th, 2018 07:19 pmWhile doing laundry at my mother's today, I completed the posted challenges.
Day 1
In your own space, talk about why you're participating in Snowflake and, if you’ve participated in the past, how the challenge has affected you. What drew you to it? What did you take away from it? What do you hope to accomplish this year?
I participate in Snowflake Challenge because I like challenging myself. I tend to lurk in fandom, I have had moments where I was active but not many or for long, so I always try to do the one where we’re challenged to leave a comment.
This year, I was hoping to spark some inspiration (I’ve been lacking in that for about two years now) and in years past it has helped.
Day 2
In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone.
Technically I’ve been in fandom since I was a young child. My brother was into the X-men comics and I would read them when he was done. As I got older my fandoms changed. There was Knight Rider and Airwolf and The Black Stallion Series.
Then in 2000, Sci-Fi Channel aired their version of The Invisible Man. Even though I had been watching Farscape for a year already, I didn’t become involved until Iman premiered. Iman was the first fandom I was ever active in. It’s also the first fandom I read fic for. Because Farscape and Iman aired back-to-back on the same night, I joined the bboards for both shows and found people like me online.
Some of my best fandom memories are with the friends I made from those two shows. In fact, one of favorites is when a BNF wrote me a little something because I was having a really bad day at work.
Day 3
In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.
I’m not currently reading fic right now.
Day 4
In your own space, create a fannish wishlist. No limits on size or type of fanwork; just tell us what you’d like to see.
I already did this one. You can find it here.
Day 5
Recommend a fannish or creative resource.
I don’t really use these. If I need to look up something I usually use Google. If there’s something specific to Stargate, I use Gateworld.
Day 6
Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.
Like I said on Day 3, I’m not currently reading fanfic right now.
Day 7:
In your own space, create a love meme for yourself. Let people tell you how amazing and awesome and loveable you really are.
I already did this. You can find it here.
Day 8
In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.
The first three episodes of season one of Hawaii Five-0 (2010): Pilot, Ohana, and Malama Ka Aina.
In the pilot, we meet Steve and Danny. From the moment they lay eyes on each other, they're bickering like an old married couple. Or, as is the case with my Vampire AU, like they've known each other for centuries.
In Ohana, the team becomes closer to being ohana. Plus, we get to see Kono being a badass.
In Malama Ka Aina, Steve and Danny get dressed up to go undercover as whales at an illegal casino. Steve announces them as The Edwards'; implying they're a couple.
Those three episodes form the foundation of the family that is the original four members of 5-0.
Day 9
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.
I already did this. You can find it here.
Day 10
In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) Tell us what makes it work for you, and why it appeals to you so much. Talk about what you like to see in fanworks featuring that theme most. Feel free to include recs and examples!
I love it all. Fluff, smut, funny, angsty, happy ending, not so happy ending. So long as the story captures my attention.
Day 11
Share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life.
Since the first fanfic I completed was CSI: Miami, I’d say that show changed my life. While the first story I wrote was in the X-men fandom, I never completed it.
Day 12
In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a podfic, an icon, a sketch, a meta, or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Cross stitch. Draft an essay about a particular medium. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of book you love, a ship manifesto, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Create something.
I am an incredibly slow writer. I’m in the middle of a couple of different fics. Since I have a long weekend coming up, I plan on working on them. Once I finish one, I’ll post a link here.
Day 13:
In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.
I mainly have just one goal: get my shit together. I’m already working on this by cleaning my apartment with the assistance (in the form of butt kicking) of an online friend.
Day 14
In your own space, create your own challenge. Whatever your challenge is, and have fun with it!
I am unable to come up with anything for this one.
