Feb. 24th, 2003 12:12 amFirst, no, I haven't been fired or anything like that. I'm on lunch (there's a computer in the breakroom for employee use) and wanted to post this while I'm thinking about it.
If you've been reading this journal for any length of time, you know that I couldn't care less what someone's sexual preference is; that I feel it's between them, their god and the consenting adult they're with. You also know that two of my fandoms deal with the military, and DADT. Although, I really don't understand it, even now.
BUT that's not what this post is about.
I can't recall a show having a plotline centered around DADT and that's just adding to my confusion about it. And since the repeal, I haven't seen any plots dealing with that, either.
Until now.
I watch a show on Lifetime called Army Wives. This season we've been introduced to a new character played by Kellie Martin. She's military intelligence and gay.
She's been hiding it, because of DADT, and now she's decided she's done hiding it.
She was recently injured in 'a conflict' and when she arrived back stateside, she was seen kissing her girlfriend.
She's up for the Bronze Star but the Major in charge of the press release doesn't like her sexual preference. He took his 'concerns' to a General that he knows feels the same as he does.
The writers made me proud, however, by having this General tell the Major that he doesn't care what his personal preferences about gays in the military are, the Army says they can serve without hiding who they are and he's going to support that stance.
Anyway, just wanted to share that there are shows out there that support this decision and I'm glad I'm watching one of them.
