It wasn't that my parents discouraged me from writing; mostly because they didn't know I was making up stories. It was more that I was never encouraged to use my imagination in any way. We didn't do arts and crafts and when I took art in school, I was not encouraged to keep at it.
I did, however, have an English teacher who told me to not waste my time writing when I expressed an interest when I was in high school. I had written most of a chapter (IIRC) and asked her to read it. She told me it wasn't good but didn't offer any advise to make it better. And when I say she told me to not waste my time, she actually said something along the lines of 'no one will buy this because it's not an interesting premise. So I wouldn't bother, if I were you'.
