I didn't think I had anything for this one, either, but while I was out yesterday, this came to me.
So, in SGA we find out that John Sheppard grew up rich but not how he ended up a Major (then Lieutenant Colonel) in the Air Force.
As the oldest, John's father expected him to take over the family business. But after John's mother died, he starting withdrawing into himself. He spent more and more time in the stables and riding his horse and his father didn't like that.
So, he tried forbidding him from spending so much time in the stables. But John still spent most of his time there. His father ended up sending him to a boarding school and that was the one thing that finally drove John to cut ties with his family.
He went to college, probably the Air Force academy, and at some point while serving, met and married his ex-wife.
